Message from the Director

Dear Emeritus College members,

The Emeritus College celebrated our mission of supporting research and recognizing the achievements of our members at the delightful and inspiring Emeritus College 2026 Award and Honors Reception on June 15.

We celebrated distinguished careers through dedicated honors, highlighting lifelong contributions to academia and the surrounding community with:

---Rick Doner receiving the Emeritus College Distinguished Faculty Award. His nominators, Sharon Strocchia and Karen Stolley, highlighted that “If we understand the ‘spirit of Emory’ to be sustained critical engagement coupled with an abiding concern for the common good, then Rick Doner surely epitomizes that spirit.”

---Gray Crouse receiving the Emeritus College Service Award. His nominator, Ann Rogers, said “his dedication, expertise, and willingness to help have made a lasting contribution to Emory University, the Emeritus College, and retirement organizations throughout Georgia and North America."

We celebrated the Emeritus College Bianchi-Bugge Award recipients and Emory College of Arts and Sciences Heilbrun Distinguished Fellows. We are looking forward to hearing more about:

---Rosemary Magee’s Bianchi-Bugge-funded research, which will extend her earlier Heilbrun-funded research with an exploration of the time that Sally Fitzgerald and her then-husband, Robert Fitzgerald, poet and translator, spent in Europe in the 1950s, as part of a series of essays.

---Roger Rochat’s Bianchi-Bugge-funded development of a website of resources to complement the autobiography of his inspiring public health career at the CDC and Emory, and the establishment of the Global Elimination of Maternal Mortality from Abortion (GEMMA).

---Harvey Klehr’s Heilbrun Fellowship supported development of an artificial intelligence research assistant, “Friday,” for scholars and the public to engage with vast collections of materials on Soviet espionage in America in the 1930-1950s.

---Bruce Knauf’s Heilbrun Fellowship supported publication of his book, Buddhist Resilience in Eastern Tibet: Riding the Dragon. It will make possible the inclusion of rare and important photographs, which are not simply illustrations but an essential part of the evidence, authenticity, and public impact of the work.

Thank you all for helping us to support you and recognize your achievements by continuing to share your scholarship, teaching, service, and awards with us by emailing dianne.becht@emory.edu. We will be developing a survey to streamline this process.

We hope you will join us in July for our Lunch Colloquiums on:

---Monday, July 13, for a conversation with Lisa Loveall, Emory Director of Open Expressions Programs

---Monday, July 29, for a Potluck Lunch and lively conversation

This newsletter provides information on our members and upcoming events, including the July Lunch Colloquiums, MedShare, Conversations Group, and Athens’ Pizza lunch.

We hope you enjoy the newsletter! We hope to see you soon!

Kristy

PLEASE NOTE

Our Summer semester programming will conclude with the Emeritus Potluck Lunch Colloquium on Monday, July 27, 2026.

The newsletter will take a brief respite and will resume in September.

“Open Expression at Emory University"

Lisa Loveall, Director of Open Expression Programs, will share an overview of open expression at Emory University, including the framework and application of the Open Expression Policy (Policy 8.14). The session will engage faculty emeritus in a discussion of the university’s approach to open expression, highlighting its core principles and how Emory supports the free exchange of ideas while preserving its academic mission.

Bill Brown, a 2024 Heilbrun Award recipient, recently shared information on how the funds were used. His work, "Creating Digital Images that are Robotically Rendered as Oil Paintings" is superb. Be sure to click on the link below to view his website. The artwork below is one of his pieces entitled "Quantum Chaos 03".

The money I received was used to develop my artistic work as a pioneer in the use of robotic painting technologies. I've been able to print out 25 successful oil paintings created from digital files and am planning to continue with this work. It hasn't been an easy task to get this technology to produce the museum quality work I'm looking for but that's to be expected with a technology still in fine tuning mode.

Now that I have an acceptable body of work I'm going to apply to galleries and museums for showing opportunities. I do have some interest from Gagosian Gallery, one of the most prestigious galleries in NYC. But I don't want to over sell this one opportunity. Lots of great artists out there producing great work.

Thanks again for your support. The work can be viewed on my website:

Exploring the Campus with Dianne

Last month's exploration led us to something that's hard to miss......if you happen to be in the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Administration Building (WHSCAB), 1440 Clifton Road.

Measuring 66 feet long and three stories high, the enormous Medical Science History mosaic is the creation of Italian-born artist Sirio Tonelli. The artwork can be found on the street level lobby of the building.

The mural, originally titled “Medicine Through the Ages: A Mosaic” and officially unveiled in 1996, boasts more than 2.5 million small tiles that wonderfully convey medical history, including depictions of more than 30 key historical figures and events.

The Medical Science History mosaic contains 33 colorful panels that span more than 12,000 years of innovation, dating all the way back to 10,000 BCE.

If you haven't seen this magnificent work of art, I highly recommend taking the time to visit the WHSCAB building and marvel at this creation. The mosaic can be viewed by the general public during normal weekday hours.

I don't know about you, but these days I'm usually seeking places where I can get away from the constant barrage of politics, news and well, just about everything else.

We've explored this place in the past, but it's worth visiting again. It is one of my favorite spots on campus to meditate and simply enjoy the nature around me.....and get away from it all.

Where will you find this on the Emory campus?
