Message from the Director

Dear Emeritus College Members,

I am excited to join you as the new Director of the Emeritus College. Thank you to former directors Ann Rogers and Gray Crouse for guiding me as I begin this role. And to the Executive Committee, Dianne Becht, and many others, for welcoming me. I look forward to working with you all to facilitate the Emeritus College’s mission. I would like to invite you to connect with me so I can get to know you and your priorities for the College. Please email me at kmartyn@emory.edu if you would like to get together or to share your thoughts and ideas.

I am a tenured Professor and Independence Chair in Nursing Education with many years of academic leadership at Emory (since 2013) and the University of Michigan (2007-2013), and more than 40 years of experience in academia. I am a Fulbright Scholar. In 2021, I received a Fulbright Research award with King’s College London to conduct the “UK and US Leadership of Nursing Education During a Pandemic” project, and since then have assisted the US-UK Fulbright Commission with engagement initiatives.

At Emory, I have enjoyed collaborating in a variety of ways across campus, including on the Faculty Council, Emory SACSCOC Reaccreditation Quality Enhancement Project, and six years on the Tenure, Appointment, and Promotions Committee (TPAC). I participated in the Emory Academic Leadership Program and am a fellow of the Woodruff Academic Leadership Program. I will continue to teach in the Nursing PhD program, conduct research on the nursing workforce, and serve on the School of Nursing promotion and tenure committee.

Over the past few months, I have attended a number of intellectually stimulating, informative, and enjoyable Emeritus College events such as Lunch Colloquiums, pre-retirement sessions, and Athens Pizza lunches. Thank you to all of the Emeritus members engaged in making these activities and many others happen. The intellectual engagement across disciplines in the College fosters a valuable and unique opportunity for learning and expression. For example, this week Drew Williamson, MD (School of Medicine faculty, with Emory’s Empathetic AI for Health Initiative and AI.Humanity Initiative) presented at the Research Colloquia on AI and medicine. He described his research on PathChat, an assistive tool tailored to pathology to improve diagnosis and treatment options for patients. The potential for humans and AI to work in harmony to improve health was highlighted. This presentation and the questions asked by the Emeritus College members resulted in stimulating discussion of implications for health, medicine, and education.

The Emeritus College at Emory is advancing the missions of Emory and the Emeritus College through intellectual, social, and service collaborations, connections, and contributions, and I am honored to facilitate this as the Director of the Emeritus College.

Sincerely,

Kristy

PLEASE NOTE

Lunch Colloquium Food Cost Increase

We are sorry to announce a need to increase the price for our food at the Lunch Colloquiums. Rising food costs and recent budget cuts at the University have created a need to ask for $15 instead of the usual $10 if you plan to have our lunches at future meetings.

As in the past, we ask that you bring cash as we are not equipped to accept credit or electronic charges.

Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to seeing you at the HobbyFest (see below).

Walking the Campus with Dianne

The hallway of windows from our previous walk connects the original hospital building to the newer hospital towers on Clifton Road. Driving on Clifton allows you to go directly underneath this particular walkway that is emblazoned with the large Emory University identifier (see third photo below).

This walkway also connects to a couple of other hallways in the hospital towers; one goes to Building B Clinic, and the other takes you to the second floor area of the Towers, where you will find a cafe and pharmacy, among other things on that floor.

The second photo below is a panoramic view of where the bridge/walkway connects with the hallway into the hospital towers. A third hallway from that juncture (not seen in the photo) goes to the Building B Clinic.

Temperatures are still summery hot but let's go outdoors and revisit a spot we looked at a few years ago. Despite the heat, this place is in a cool area and also, in my opinion, one of the coolest looking items on campus.

Where will you find this on the Emory campus?
