Message from the Director

Our Lunch Colloquium series continues to inspire and educate, and our most recent speaker, Brendon Murphy, a history teacher from the Marist School in Atlanta, was no exception. On Monday, June 2, Mr. Murphy delivered a compelling presentation titled “From Ancient Prejudices to Modern Challenges: Exploring Historical and Contemporary Relations between Christian and Jewish Communities,” tracing the long and troubling history of antisemitism from the late Roman Empire to the 20th century.

Beginning with the adoption of Christianity as the state religion of the Roman Empire in the 4th century, Mr. Murphy explored how religious and cultural biases evolved over time. He examined the role of the medieval Catholic Church in perpetuating antisemitic narratives and brought the audience through to the horrors of the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. His talk was richly illustrated with powerful visuals, including stained-glass windows depicting violent attacks on Jewish individuals, sculptures of Ecclesia and Synagoga flanking the doors of Notre Dame Cathedral, which symbolize the perceived triumph of Christianity over Judaism, and a chilling excerpt from Martin Luther’s 1543 treatise "On the Jews and Their Lies," which advocated for the destruction of Jewish synagogues and homes.

Despite the heavy subject matter, Mr. Murphy concluded on a hopeful note. He highlighted the transformative impact of the Second Vatican Council’s 1965 declaration Nostra Aetate, which formally rejected the notion that Jews were collectively responsible for the death of Christ and marked a significant step toward reconciliation. His presentation ended with a short video about the commissioning of the sculpture “Synagoga and Ecclesia in Our Time” by Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia to celebrate 50 years of progress of Catholic-Jewish relations and the installation of a copy of this symbol of mutual respect on the campus of the Marist School in Atlanta.

Our next Lunch Colloquium on Tuesday, June 17 should be of interest to everyone. Vincent Marconi, Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, will discuss “Holistic Approaches to Aging.” His research explores aging through a comprehensive lens that integrates biomedical, behavioral, and environmental perspectives. This approach aims to enhance the quality of life for older adults by addressing and mitigating age-related issues such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, and frailty.

Finally, I wish to thank our diligent proofreaders and editors (Ann Hartle and Marilynne McKay), our Zoom team members (John Boli, Gray Crouse, Ron Gould, and Vernon Robbins), and Don O’Shea who edits our videos

"Holistic Approaches to Aging"

The Emeritus College welcomes Dr. Vincent Marconi who will speak about his work exploring holistic approaches to aging humans through multiple perspectives.

As reported last year by Emory News, Dr. Marconi “was always suspicious of the idea that healthy aging could be achieved through traditional doctoring alone. Over time he came to increasingly believe in maintaining a strong connection between mind, body, and spirit. A holistic approach to aging considers aging humans through multiple perspectives at once, including the biomedical, behavioral and the social and physical environment.”

His work is breaking boundaries and transforming how we understand and treat various common age-related diseases, including diabetes, cancer, heart disease and dementia. Indeed, Dr. Marconi stands at the forefront of emerging science whose application of multiple perspectives is altering our abilities to age more successfully. “We can either treat diseases individually or use holistic approaches that target the key pathways which address the whole person and can prevent new conditions from occurring.”

About Vincent Marconi:

Dr. Marconi joined the Emory faculty in 2009. He is an Emory University Professor of Medicine, in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Professor of Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health, Director of the Infectious Disease Research Program at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center, staff physician at the VA Infectious Diseases Clinic and the Grady Ponce Clinic which together serve over 8000 people with HIV. In addition to his work at Emory, he maintains an ongoing research collaboration that began in 2004 with colleagues in Durban, South Africa.

Dr. Marconi received his Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Cell Science from the University of Florida and his MD degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. He completed his clinical and research training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. Dr. Marconi served with the United States Air Force from 2005 to 2009 where he was Director of the HIV Medical Evaluation Unit and Research Program in San Antonio, TX.

Lunch Colloquium -- Drew Williamson -- Monday -- June 30, 2025

“Chatting About Medical AI”

Generative models such as ChatGPT have catapulted AI further into the mainstream than ever before, while interested parties in healthcare have begun to test these models in medical settings. However, these models are rarely purpose-built for medical applications and the majority of those that do exist are targeted at a broader segment of healthcare than any individual provider practices. I’ll discuss the design, training, and evaluation of PathChat, our multimodal generative model created specifically for pathology. I’ll also discuss possible future directions in this line of inquiry.

About Drew Williamson:

Drew Williamson is an Assistant Professor in the department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Emory University. He completed a BA in Mathematics at Oberlin College, an MD at Case Western Reserve University, residency in Anatomic Pathology at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, and fellowships in Molecular Genetic Pathology and Clinical Informatics at Mass General Brigham. This training was followed by postdoctoral research in the lab of Faisal Mahmood, PhD at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. A board certified Pathologist, Drew's research focuses on the applications of deep learning-based methods to pathology data, from histology images to genomics to, most recently, natural language.

HobbyFest Lunch Colloquium - July 14

One of our upcoming Lunch Colloquiums will feature you! Well, maybe you....and your hobby.

Do you garden? Are you a gourmet cook? Do you collect stamps? Are you an avid photographer?

No matter what your hobby might be, it is likely others among the Emeritus College may have the same interest, or maybe your hobby will spark something new for someone else!

We plan to share our passions in a session similar to BookFest, but instead of books, we will talk about and share our favorite hobbies. Please volunteer to speak/share your interests. Time limits will be set based on the number of people who respond. We'd like to have you participate in-person, but if that is not possible, presentations can also be via Zoom.

If interested, please contact Ron Gould at rg@emory.edu.

Brendon Murphy Lunch Colloquium Follow-up

Walking the Campus with Dianne

The beautiful art piece discovered on our previous walk can be found in the elevator lobby area in the Emory Hospital Tower (the newer building across from the original building on Clifton Road).

The piece was created in 2017 and is titled "Paired Bird Forms," by David Lasker. It is made of carved Cherry or Pine and is one of many pieces that are part of the permanent collection of the Emory University Hospital.

"A tree that once stood tall now lives forever; its true natural beauty transformed into a piece of art."

The relationship of the complimentary forms of the Paired Birds create an abstract heart shape. The negative and positive spaces fuse the outer shape and the inner heart into a unified bond, and the graceful curves of their forms are a gentle reminder of the preciousness of life, and the true essence of each form is captured from within the wood. Variations in color and natural imperfections in the wood show its character, and the wood grain was defined and enhanced during the shaping and carving process. "Paired Bird Forms" pays homage to the natural environment; wood used in these sculptures was reclaimed from the hospital site. -- David Lasker

For our next walk let's look at a place we've visited before. If you look closely at the photo, and can make out the name on the stone, which may serve as a hint. This is a place you wouldn't expect to find on a university campus.

Where will you find this on the Emory campus?
