I hope that everyone has a safe and pleasant Thanksgiving. In addition to being thankful for family and friends, I’m thankful for the many members of the Emeritus College who contribute their time and expertise to make our programs successful.

Danelle Jung’s fascinating presentation about “Rebel Governance in the Age of Climate Change,” was not recorded on Monday, November 18 because she is still collecting data about rebel groups and their efforts towards combating climate change. She reported that armed rebel groups in Africa and Asia often encourage efforts to combat deforestation for strategic reasons, and often aid local populations after floods and other climate disasters. Within the next few months, she anticipates adding information about rebel groups from Central and South America and their responses to climate change to her database.

If you are looking for new books to read and/or want to recreate the Icelandic tradition of Jólabókaflóðið (Christmas Book Flood) by gifting friends and family members with new books on Christmas Eve, you may want to attend our next Lunch Colloquium on Monday, December 2.  During Bookfest, you’ll learn about a variety of fiction and non-fiction books that your colleagues have been reading this fall. Based on previous Bookfests, I can almost guarantee that you will discover at least one new book that sounds interesting.

In closing, I’d like to thank Anne Hartle and Marilynne McKay for their assistance with proofreading and editing this newsletter. I also want to express my appreciation for Don O’Shea’s diligent editing of the videos from our Lunch Colloquiums and the Zoom team who manage the technology associated with using our hybrid equipment.

“Recommendations for Fall Reading”

Read any good books lately? Might you be willing to recommend one (or two) of those good books to those of us wondering what to read next? We are looking for volunteers to describe books they have enjoyed that others might enjoy, as well. If you’ve got one to discuss, we’ll be happy to allot you five minutes of our BookFest time. If you’ve got two we can schedule you for ten minutes. NOTE: Five minutes per book will be enforced.

And of course, you can choose a book or books of any kind at all. If you would like to volunteer, please do so in an email to Ron Gould - rg@emory.edu Deadline is Friday, November 29, 2024.

Please supply Ron with the name the book or books you’ll be recommending, and let him know if you will need five or ten minutes. We will schedule accordingly. First come, first scheduled, until we run out of time.

Suggestions for book presentations:

--Why are you recommending this book?

--Why do you think others would like this book?

--What is noteworthy about this book?

--Any criticism of the book?

Walking the Campus with Dianne

The ornate cross from our last walk can be found on Convocation Hall. This building was once home to Pitts Theology Library, and before that it was originally the Theology Building, the first home of the Candler School of Theology and Durham Chapel. The cross on the building can be viewed from the courtyard area at the end of the building near White Hall.

Originally known as the theology building, the structure was completed in 1916 and was the first building to open on Emory’s main quadrangle. Now as Convocation Hall it has been meticulously restored to serve once again as a hub of academic leadership and learning.

Originally, it was named in Honor of W. I. H. PItts and his daughter, Margaret Pitts. Henry Hornbostel was the architect and it was one of three original Horbostel buildings on the Quad.

For our next walk let's look at a piece of art that might also be a good place to sit and rest when exploring.

Where will you find this on the Emory campus?
