Lunch Colloquium -- Tuesday, September 10, 2024
Patrick Allitt
Cahoon Family Professor of American History
Tuesday, September 10, 2024
11:30am-1:00pm
“The Resurrection of American Railroads”
This
lecture will explain why American railroads faced a bankruptcy crisis
in the 1970s that led many observers to believe that they no longer
served any useful purpose, and should be abandoned. It then explains how
the railroads reinvented themselves between 1980 and 2010, enabling
them to revive, becoming more profitable, powerful, and useful than ever
before.
About Patrick Allitt:
Patrick
Allitt is the Cahoon Family Professor of American History here at
Emory. He was born and raised in England, has a BA in Modern
History from Oxford University (1977) and a Ph.D. in American History
from the University of California, Berkeley (1986). He has been a
member of our history department since 1988. He is the author of
seven books and is currently working on the eighth: a general history of
American railroads.

Ron Gould
Goodrich C. White Professor of Mathematics Emeritus
Monday, September 23, 2024
11:30am-1:00pm
“Discussing Student Protests”
With
the interest in the events surrounding the protests on campus, we think
it might be useful to host a discussion on the pros and cons of student
protests. As always we will include questions and comments
from the audience. The discussion should be broader than just the
Emory protests,
but of course, we expect that to be included.
About Ron Gould:
Ronald
J. Gould is Goodrich C. White Professor Emeritus from
Emory University. He received his B.S. in mathematics from
SUNY Fredonia in 1972, his M.S. in Computer Science in 1978 and Ph.D. in
mathematics in 1979 from Western Michigan University, with specialty in
Graph Theory and combinatorial mathematics. In his career
his has written over 190 papers and two books, Graph Theory (Dover Pub.)

EUEC Awards Reception -- Follow-up
On
the afternoon of Monday, July 29, members of the Emory University
Emeritus College, family and friends gathered to celebrate the
achievements of the 2024 recipients of the various awards offered each
year by the Emory College of Arts and Sciences, and the Emeritus
College.
After
welcoming attendees, Ann E. Rogers, Director of the Emeritus College
turned the podium over to Glenn Kellum, Chair of the Awards Committee to
present the Heilbrun Fellowships, awarded this year to William Brown,
Senior Lecturer Emeritus of Film and Media Studies and Vernon Robbins,
Professor Emeritus of Religion.
Alan
Abramowitz, Alben W. Barkley Professor Emeritus of Political Science,
received the 2024 Faculty of Distinction Award, which recognizes
Emeritus College members who have made significant professional
contributions since retirement to Emory, its affiliates, and/or
communities that reflect the “spirit of Emory.” Distinguished Service
Awards recognize Emeritus College members who have made significant
contributions by way of service to Emory and its affiliated institutions
and/or to local, state, national, or international communities or
organizations that reflect the “spirit of Emory.” The recipients of the
2024 Distinguished Service Awards were Stephen Nowicki, Charles Howard
Candler Professor of Psychology Emeritus and Peter Sebel, Professor
Emeritus of Anesthesiology.
The
final award was a special one created to honor an individual who has
worked tirelessly with little or no recognition, but does not qualify
for the Distinguished Faculty Award since he is not yet
retired. Ron Gould presented Jagdish Sheth, Charles H. Kellstadt
Professor of Marketing with the EUEC Lifetime Achievement Award in
recognition of the major role he has played in the Emeritus College
while remaining an active and important researcher in the Emory
community.
Please join me in congratulating this year's award recipients for their accomplishments
--Ann

10:00am - 12:00pm
M. C. Carlos Museum - All Galleries
Join us for our new monthly Relaxed Mornings!
Relaxed
Mornings are for anyone who would appreciate a calmer visit to the
museum. Scheduled on the first Saturday of each month, Relaxed Mornings
are primarily for, but not limited to, autistic young people and adults;
adults living with mild cognitive impairment; and any other visitors
with sensory needs or who may prefer a more relaxed experience, along
with their families, friends, and care givers.
Sensory
friendly bags are available for all guests at the Information Desk on
Level One. These bags include an assortment of items to help visitors
better enjoy our galleries. Three types of fidget toys and noise
cancelling headphones are included for those who may need additional
sensory support. There is also a KultureCity

Two and the balcony on Level Three. A pre-visit social story can be found here.
Relaxed
Mornings are scheduled during regular museum hours at times that
generally experience less traffic and no other programs are scheduled.

An Afternoon with Anna Maria Horsford and Victoria Rowell
Saturday, September 14, 2024
1:00 - 2:30pm
Jones Room, 3rd Floor of Robert W. Woodruff Library, Emory University
540 Asbury Circle
Atlanta, GA 30322
The
Rose Library proudly serves as the repository for the Camille Billops
and James V. Hatch Archives. In 1981, Billops and Hatch began
publishing Artist and Influence, a journal dedicated to preserving
the oral histories of artists, art historians, filmmakers, and writers.
Over the decades, the duo coordinated more than 1,500 interviews, with a
little more than 400 appearing in print. Tapping into the spirit from
which this dedicated couple lived and worked, the Rose Library seeks to
continue their tradition by hosting public Artist & Influence
interviews.
This
year's program will be an afternoon interview with actresses Anna Maria
Horsford and Victoria Rowell on Saturday, Sept. 14th from 1-2:30pm in
Woodruff Library's Jones Room. Registration is requested, but not
required for this free public event.
Anna
Maria Horsford is an Emmy nominated actress and director, whose
extensive filmography includes "The Bold and the Beautiful", “Amen,” and
“The Wayans Bros.” Victoria Rowell is an award-winning actress,
producer, director, and writer whose credits include “The Young and the
Restless”, “Diagnosis: Murder,” and “The Rich and the Ruthless.”

Walking the Campus with Dianne
|
A new semester and many places to explore!
Let's
begin with a walk on a suspension bridge. The Emory campus has many
different types of bridges but this footbridge is the only one if it's
kind at the university.

Where will you find this on the Emory campus?
