Message from the Director

When you receive this newsletter, I will be vacationing in Iceland. I’m spending a week hiking and enjoying cooler temperatures (highs range from the mid-50s to 60 degrees in July). Hopefully when I return to Atlanta, the current high temperatures plaguing most of the country will have moderated somewhat.

Our last Lunch Colloquium of the summer on July 8, featured Robin Lackey, University Architect and Senior Director of Project Planning and Design, and David Payne, Associate Vice President for Planning and Engagement. As part of their presentation entitled “Emory Master Plan Update,” they included an historical overview of the Briarcliff campus, the Clifton Road Campus, and the Oxford Campus, highlighted several recently completed projects as well as several upcoming projects on the Briarcliff and Oxford campuses, and described the process that occurs annually to prioritize building renovations and/or new construction projects.

Instead of our traditional Lunch Colloquium on Monday, July 29, we will hold an Awards Reception at 2:00 pm to highlight the outstanding accomplishments of our members. Those receiving special recognition that afternoon include Alan Abramowitz (Distinguished Faculty Award), William Brown, (Heilbrun Award), Ron Gould (Bianchi-Bugge Award), Stephen Nowicki (Distinguished Service Award), Vernon Robbins (Heilbrun Award), and Peter Sebel (Distinguished Service Award).

Our fall Lunch Colloquium series will kick off on Monday, September 10 featuring Patrick Allitt, Cahoon Family Professor of American History. Other speakers during the fall semester will include Jag Sheth, Alan Abramowitz, Stephen Crist, and Danielle Jung. Even though the fall semester won’t begin for another six weeks, the Mind Matters Committee is already beginning to schedule a diverse group of speakers for spring semester.

In closing, I want to thank Ann Hartle and Marilynne McKay for assisting with proofreading and editing the newsletter. I also wish to thank Don O’Shea for editing our videos, and Zoom team members (Gray Crouse, Ron Gould, and Vernon Robbins) for their assistance with our Lunch Colloquiums.

--Ann

PLEASE NOTE

Lunch Colloquium programming concluded for the summer with our July 8 talk.  Lunch Colloquiums will resume in the Fall semester and the newsletter will take a brief respite and will resume September 4, 2024.

Walking the Campus with Dianne

The peaceful fountain from our last walk can be found in the courtyard area at the Miller-Ward Alumni House on Houston Mill Road.

The fountain is named in memory of Martha Malone Warren ’35L by her family. A native of Monticello, Georgia, Warren completed Emory law school when few women were pursuing the profession. She practiced law for several years with her husband, Julian Benjamin Warren ’31C-’34L, and managed several family businesses and a family trust.

Since this is the last newsletter for the Summer season, I'll simply leave you with some photos I took during one of our Lunch Colloquiums about a month ago. As many of you know, I monitor much of the Zoom meetings during colloquiums in the lobby outside the meeting room. Unfortunately (or perhaps it is fortunate), my attention is sometimes drawn away from our meetings to a random wildlife activity just behind the Luce Center.

The new fawn in the photo below was such a wonderful thing to witness! From what I could see, the baby was quite new to the world -- the little legs were wobbly and getting used to walking and Mama was still cleaning him/her after the birth. Note: Sorry for the low quality of the photos, but it was the best I could do through the glass windows.

Hope you enjoy the photos! Stay cool during the hot days of August and we will walk the campus again when the newsletter resumes in early September.
