The first Lunch Colloquium

for the summer semester

will be on

Monday, May 20, 2024 featuring Daniel LaChance

Details and Registration

in the May 15 Newsletter

Message from the Director

Spring semester is almost over. Monday, April 29 will mark the end of classes for students as well as our last Lunch Colloquium of the semester. Our final speaker will be Ron Gould, Goodrich C. White Professor Emeritus. His presentation, “Math and Marriage--Don’t Call the Lawyers Yet,” will explain the marriage problem in mathematics, using common examples of pairing problems. He promises to minimize the mathematical content during his presentation and maximize the jokes as much as possible. Although math was not my favorite subject as a student, I am looking forward to his presentation.

If you are interested in attending Lunch Colloquiums this summer, please pay close attention to the schedule. We’re skipping May 13 since that’s the date of Emory’s Commencement, and will resume our usual summer programing on Monday, May 20 with a presentation entitled “Cuffs of Love: Punishment and Redemption in Crimesploitation Television,” by Daniel LaChance, Winship Distinguished Research Professor in History. There will be two Lunch Colloquiums in June (June 10 and June 24), and three in July (July 1, July 8, and July 29). As usual, the speakers and chosen topics will reflect the wide range of scholarship found at Emory University.

I wish to extend a special thanks to Dianne Becht. Without her behind-the-scenes assistance, the quality of programs offered by the Emeritus College would suffer. In addition to picking up lunches and arranging the room in the Luce Center for our Lunch Colloquiums, during the past month Dianne has assisted with three pre-retirement seminars and the Women’s Conversation group, added numerous new members to our database and mailing list, kept track of registrations for our recent tour at the Carlos Museum and the lunch at Athens Pizza, and made the necessary arrangements for the Sheth Distinguished Lecture at the Miller-Ward House.

Finally, I want to thank our diligent proofreaders and editors, Ann Hartle and Marilynne McKay for their assistance with the newsletter. I am also appreciative of our Zoom team members, Gray Crouse, Ron Gould, and Vernon Robbins for their assistance during our Lunch Colloquiums.

Lunch Colloquium -- Monday, April 29, 2024

Ron Gould

Goodrich C. White Professor Emeritus

Monday, April 29, 2024

11:30am-1:00pm

"Math and Marriage – Don't Call the Lawyers Yet"

Pairings of objects from various sets has many applications, for example, pairing applicants with jobs, pairing representatives with districts, pairing wines with foods, and especially pairing people with each other.  This idea of pairing has naturally come to be called the marriage problem in mathematics.  In this talk I will look at several special cases of the general pairing problem, including optimal pairings from several different points of view.  I will limit the mathematics as much as possible and maximize the jokes as much as possible.  After all, there is no limit to the number of strange case marriage jokes available.

About Ron Gould:

Ronald J. Gould is Goodrich C. White Professor Emeritus from Emory University. He received his B.S. in mathematics from SUNY Fredonia in 1972, his M.S. in Computer Science in 1978 and Ph.D. in mathematics in 1979 from Western Michigan University, with a specialty in Graph Theory and combinatorial mathematics.  In his career his has written over 190 papers and two books, Graph Theory (Dover Pub.) and Mathematics in Games, Sports, and Gambling: The Games People Play, (Taylor Francis Group) which received the American Library Association Choice Award, Outstanding Academic Titles in 2010. He has directed 28 Ph.D. students and 26 MS students and several postdocs.

COI Disclosure Profiles

If you have an emeritus appointment, you may have received an email entitled ”Reminder: You are required to complete an update of your COI Disclosure Profile."  As an emeritus faculty member, you are not required to complete or update the COI (Conflict of Interest) profile since you are no longer employed by Emory University.

Apparently, the research office is attempting to catch up with disclosure requirements for all faculty members who are responsible for the design, conduct, and reporting of research. According to Deepika Bhatia, Associate Vice President Research Compliance & Regulatory Affairs, emeritus faculty have active HR accounts, and the HR feed that provides information to the COI system continues to include emeritus faculty members in the disclosure cohort. Hopefully, now that the office of the Senior Vice President for Research has been alerted to the problem, you won’t be asked to complete a COI disclosure in the future. If you receive a request to complete a COI disclosure form, please forward the email to me so I can ask their IT team to manually remove your name from the list.

Sheth Lecture - Follow-up

Twenty years ago, Dr. Jagdish and Mrs. Madhuri Sheth, created a fund to support inviting an outstanding speaker to address Emeritus College members, and others interested attendees. Previous speakers have included former president Jimmy Carter, Natasha Trethewey, Robert Spano, Rosemary Magee, and Zamil Zainaldin.

To mark the 20th Anniversary, the Mind Matters committee invited Dr. Jagdish Sheth, the Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Goizueta Business School of Marketing, who discussed his journey as an “accidental scholar” from a childhood in Burma (now Myanmar) and India, to his current position as leading theorist about buyer behavior, a sought-after consultant and member of numerous corporate boards, and a philanthropist. If you missed his inspiring presentation, it will be posted on our website in a week or two.

This project—now in its third year—has developed as a collaboration between the Schwartz-Artist-in-Residence program, EUSO, and Emory composition faculty to bring to Emory’s campus emerging composers from backgrounds currently underrepresented within American classical music. For the 2024 presentation, EUSO premieres a new orchestral work by this year's project winner, Johanny Navarro.

Walking the Campus with Dianne

Did anyone recognize the Emory Recycle Center during our last walk? As I mentioned before, it is somewhat hidden, but once you find it, you realize it's a wonderful thing to have on campus. The Recycle Center is located at 868 Peavine Creek Drive. It's beyond the Chappell Park baseball field and the Visual Arts Building, but just before the Michael Kaminsky Intramural Park on Peavine Creek Drive.

Anyone in the general Emory community can take glass, newspapers and more, to be recycled -- the drop-off is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

For more information, take a look at the Emory Recycles/Facilities Management website by clicking here.

In 2019, Emory received the Outstanding Institutional Recycling Program award during the Georgia Recycling Coalition’s annual conference. You can read more about that by clicking here.

For our next walk I'd like to revisit a place that we explored almost four years ago. This place houses my favorite piece of art on the main campus at Emory. Hint: It's not in the museum!

Where will you find this on the Emory campus?
