Message from the Director

I hope everyone was able to spend time with their friends and family over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Although Leslie Gordon, the Executive Director from the Breman Jewish Heritage Museum didn’t bring any artifacts from the museum with her on Monday, November 20, she brought two colleagues, Rabbi Joe Prass, the Director of the Weinberg Center for Holocaust Education and Kayley Rapp, an Archivist, with her. Together they discussed the fascinating story of the Breman Museum and its efforts to educate others about Jewish history, culture, and the arts, including a demonstration of the digital tour of the museum that they created during the recent pandemic.

Even though fall semester classes end in less than a week, there are two more events at the Emeritus College this fall. Our final Lunch Colloquium of 2023 will occur on Monday, December 4 and feature Robert Gaynes, Professor Emeritus of Medicine. He will review the discovery of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) 40 years ago, and outline the progress that has been made in understanding the retrovirus and management of HIV/AIDS. Dr. Gaynes will also share audio clips from a 2001 interview with Dr. Françoise Barre-Sinoussi, a French scientist and Nobel Laureate who discovered HIV, discussing a bitter fight regarding scientific credit for the discovery of the virus and patent royalties from the HIV-antibody test.

The fall semester will end with a holiday gathering on Monday, December 18. Please join us in person that day to enjoy some refreshments and good conversation.

I would like to thank the members of the Mind Matters Committee (Abdullahi Ahmed An-Nain, Joyce Fluekiger, Glenn Kellum, Ron Gould, Rosemary Magee, and Denise Raynor) for scheduling a diverse and interesting group of speakers and topics. This fall we’ve learned more about the arts (visual arts, dance and music), drug development, how Hollywood is using digital technology, and about two unique programs (the Center for Native American and Indigenous Studies, and the Bremen Jewish Museum). Speakers next semester will include one of our newest faculty members as well as several members of the Emeritus College.

I am especially appreciative of our Zoom team (Gray Crouse, Ron Gould, and Vernon Robbins) who have valiantly coped with recent technical issues. Finally, I wish to thank Ann Hartle and Marilynne McKay who assist with proofreading and editing every issue of the newsletter.

Lunch Colloquium -- Monday, December 4, 2023

"The Discovery of HIV: New Insights on the

40th Anniversary of the Breakthrough "

Robert Gaynes

Professor Emeritus of Medicine

Monday, December 4, 2023

11:30-1:00

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is one of the most important pathogens ever discovered. Forty years after its discovery, remarkable progress has occurred, challenges remain, and new insights from the story have emerged. Dr. Robert Gaynes, Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Emory will discuss these insights from a 2021 interview that includes audio clips from Dr. Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, the French female scientist and 2008 Nobel Laureate who discovered HIV. She describes the virus’ discovery and how she found herself in the middle of one of the most bitter scientific disputes in recent history.

About Robert Gaynes:

Robert Gaynes, MD has been a full-time faculty member with Emory University School of Medicine since 2009. He worked as an Infectious Disease Physician at the Atlanta VA Medical Center until his retirement in January 2022.

He is a graduate of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine where he did his residency and Infectious Disease Fellowship. He was also in the Epidemic Intelligence Service at CDC. After completing his training, Dr. Gaynes worked as Hospital Epidemiologist and Infectious Disease Physician at the University of Michigan Medical Center before returning to the CDC where he worked for over 20 years.

Upon retiring from CDC, he became Professor in Emory’s Department of Medicine/Division of Infectious Diseases. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on the History of Medicine, receiving numerous teaching awards including the Dean’s Teaching Award in 2018.

As Professor Emeritus, he completed the second edition of his award-winning book, Germ Theory: Medical Pioneers in Infectious Diseases, including new chapters on the discovery of HIV, the discovery of the role of H. pylori in peptic ulcer disease, and the COVID pandemic. He continues to teach the history of medicine seminars at Emory.

Emeritus College in the News

Nice Publicity for the Emeritus College

The November 20 edition of the Emory Report included an article highlighting the Emeritus College Mock Interview program. Although the students and alumni participating in the Pre-Health Advising program are preparing for medical and dental school interviews, you do not have to be a physician or dentist to participate in the Mock Interview program. No matter what your professional background is, your experience sitting on admissions committees and/or preparing your own students for job interviews is valuable and very helpful to pre-health students.

I want to thank all the members of the Emeritus College who have participated in the Mock Interview process over the past five years. You’ve made a huge difference in the lives of our students and alumni.

Walking the Campus with Dianne

The beautiful house from our last walk.....well, bike ride for me.... is the Carlos and Marguerite Mason Guest House at 1555 Shoup Court. The building is a private retreat on the Emory University Clairmont campus offering low cost housing for organ transplant candidates, recipients, living donors, and their families.

For more information about the Mason Guest House and a video giving you a look at the interior, please click here and here.

Since my previous walk on campus was actually a bike ride, this next spot is a place that all Emory University cyclists should be aware of.

Where will you find this on the Emory campus?
